For over 50 years, Tait Communications has been designing, delivering and supporting critical communications networks for public safety, transportation and utility industries. They manufacture high-quality mobile radio systems and communication infrastructure, with the majority of their equipment being exported all around the globe. In December 2022, Tait approached us to assist in a project that was a little closer to home.

Project: Land Mobile Radio (LMR) network
Tait Systems New Zealand (TSNZ) is in the process of building a nationwide, encrypted digital Land Mobile Radio (LMR) network for Next Generation Critical Communications. This body works on behalf of the Police, Fire and Emergency, Hato Hone St John, and Wellington Free Ambulance. The LMR network is set to comprise about 500 sites, with rollout happening through to 2027 to enable agency migration.
Thousands of emergency service radios will operate on this new network. It’s a vital step in giving roughly 30,000 New Zealand frontline responders the radio technology that powers emergency teams across the world. Once complete, for the first time in New Zealand’s history, the four core emergency services agencies will share the same radio network.

What’s The Challenge?
Tait Communications needed to build a standardised, serviceable power distribution solution for hundreds of radio sites in harsh and varied NZ conditions. It was important to reduce install complexity, and meet strict safety and uptime requirements for mission-critical communications. To achieve this, TSNZ needed a partner with experience, quality and extensive NZ manufacturing capabilities. RackPower was chosen as their selected partner to deliver the solution based on these important criteria.

RackPower, together with Tait Communications, designed and engineered a custom 19 inch rack-mounted distribution board. It includes some of RackPower’s top drawer circuit protection, bus bars, comb bars and isolator switches.

Across 500 sites, the power board is the control point that keeps radios alive. By standardising a front access, lockable, clearly labelled distribution board with modular breakers and integrated bus systems, TSNZ gets faster installs, safer service, and predictable spares. The result is fewer errors, shorter outages, and a repeatable design that scales nationwide.
